The fourth annual Our Ocean conference took place in Malta, 5-6 October 2017.
Attended by leaders from 100 nations, the conference was the biggest rallying cry yet for action to clean up the world’s oceans.
Our Ocean Highlights:
- The EU has made binding commitments to addressing aquatic pollution and conservation, summarised in “EU leads the way with ambitious action for cleaner and safer seas”
- Broadcaster Sky, to its great credit, has made plastic pollution of the oceans a high profile story. The company has pledged to remove all single-use plastics by 2020, and is airing documentaries including a story about the creation of Plasticus, a life-size plastic-waste whale – a fantastic work of art with a dark and sobering message.
- Sky’s summary of the conference highlights makes essential reading.
- Prince Charles, in a keynote conference speech, said “we must act now” to save the oceans. He was involved in some camera-friendly set-pieces releasing rescued turtles back to the sea. His speech can be viewed on The Mother and Child Foundation YouTube channel here.
There is at last an increased awareness of the plight of the ocean, its intimate connection to us and our survival, and the enormous amount that needs to be done.
